ECA - 2020 Convention - Reminder ... Instructional Communication Interest Group Call for Paperws

Reminder: Call for Papers for Instructional Communication Interest Group

ECA 2020 – Baltimore, MD – April 1-5

Hello members of the Instructional Communication Interest Group! I hope you have all had a wonderful summer and that your Fall 2019 semester is off to a great start. As we head into the new semester, I do want to remind you that submissions for the Instructional Communication Interest Group are due October 15th at 11:59PM in Attendee Interactive. Please consider submitting your own work, as well as encouraging your colleagues to submit to our interest group. Our First Vice President, Dr. Jennifer Waldeck, is working hard to plan a truly exciting and innovative conference, and I would love to have a strong show of support from our interest group!

I do want to bring some of these exciting and innovative plans to your attention, most notably that the 2020 conference will feature a series of research workshops that are being offered for ECA attendees. Dr. Andrew Hayes, Professor of Psychology and Communication, will be facilitating two half-day research workshops: “Integrating Mediation and Moderation Analysis: Fundamentals using PROCESS” and “Mediation Analysis with Distinguishable Dyadic Data.”   We also have Dr. Heather Stuckey, Associate Professor of Medicine, Humanities, and Public Health Sciences at the Penn State Hershey College of Medicine, who will conduct a workshop on “Best Practices for Qualitative Communication Research.”  Pre-registration information is coming soon and both workshops are being offered by ECA at nominal cost to attendees.  If you are a rhetorical scholar, Steve Granelli, the Innovations in Rhetorical Criticism programming director, is working on some exciting and interesting offerings.  Dr. Hayes will also be offering a keynote address, “From Graduate School to Retirement:  Creating, Managing, and Refreshing a Meaningful Academic Career.”  His keynote will be addressed to scholars at all career stages, from graduate to Full Professor, on managing your career and finding motivation and direction at various transitions. These are just a few of the plans that truly illustrate the 2020 conference theme, “Harboring Innovation.”

Toward that end, I encourage you to submit your work that focuses on how we have innovated and how we need to innovate to remain relevant, cutting-edge, and unique— especially in relation to other social science disciplines. In what ways does our scholarship and teaching keep the field at the forefront of studying the powerful impact of public, private, and mediated messages on our relationships, organizations, communities, and the environment? What disruptions are communication scholars, practitioners, and teachers responding to with innovative theories, questions, methods, data analysis techniques, and practices? What opportunities exist for us to innovate with our research, service, pedagogy, and practice? What are you doing that is unique? How are you leading the way? How are you responding to your environment to ensure that your work and our field are addressing the practical communication concerns of society that exist today and that might arise tomorrow?

Our “Harboring Innovation” 2020 conference will provide a venue to showcase how we are innovating, and to deliberate the ways in which we must innovate to ensure that the communication discipline continues to make an important impact at all levels of society.
