Assistant Professor, Tenure Track

California University of Pennsylvania

Job Title: Tenure-Track Faculty Communication Studies

Position Type/Salary: This is a tenure-track faculty appointment in the Department of Communication, Design, and Culture

Rank and salary are competitive and commensurate with academic preparation and experience. An excellent fringe benefits package is included.

Job Summary/Basic Function:

Our department houses a unique interdisciplinary faculty from the fields of Communication, Rhetoric, Art History, and Philosophy. We offer students both a B.A. in Communication Studies and a B.S. in Graphic Design. In 2010, we undertook a decade-long (re)visioning process that led us to radically rethink our traditional curriculum. The new B.A. in Communication Studies is grounded in the development of core intellectual skills from the Humanities (critical reasoning, effective writing and speech, and a cultivated disposition toward seeing human language and behavior as strategic and meaningful). Upper-division courses encourage student-driven projects that develop, synergistically, into unique pathways towards careers in a variety of fields. All of our courses are crafted in such a way to require open and explicit conversation about the relationships between the processes of thinking, learning, doing, and reflecting. We seek to produce students who are independent and adaptive learners, entrepreneurial thinkers, and advocates for the Humanities in general and Communication Studies in particular.

The successful applicant must be capable of and committed to teaching, community service and outreach, and to scholarship. Successful applicant will also have experience working with diverse populations. Additional responsibilities include involvement with departmental, college-wide, and university committees and annual & periodic program level assessment. Also, in accordance with the terms of the collective bargaining agreement between the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education and APSCUF, the successful applicant might be assigned to perform work at off-campus sites, in the evening/weekend college and/or provide instruction through distance education.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

While our curriculum allows for students to make connections among many fields of inquiry into human language and behavior, we are especially keen to hire someone who can enrich our current offerings to students in relation to message design and production. We are particularly interested in talking to candidates with substantial backgrounds in new media, digital communication, multi-platform promotions, advertising, and Public Relations.

In order to be a leading applicant in this search, in addition to the aforementioned requirements, the applicant minimally must be fluent in the English language, be able to communicate well, demonstrate outstanding potential for excellence in teaching through a successful interview and/or classroom demonstration and be experienced in the use of innovative curricular approaches that are student-centered, inquiry-based, and hands-on oriented.

Minimum of Education and Training:

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Communication Studies or a terminal degree in a related field upon employment

Special Instructions to Applicants: Applications accepted only online at https://careers.calu.edu/. Physical resumes are not accepted.

To be considered, applicants must submit the following: full curriculum vitae; official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended; letter of application highlighting the applicant’s qualifications and teaching interests; a statement of teaching philosophy; and the names, addresses, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses of three current references who have knowledge of the applicant’s abilities. References will be checked. Background clearances are required and will be conducted on applicants being considered.

Unofficial transcripts are acceptable for application, but official transcripts will be required for the finalist who if offered and accepts the position after on-campus interviews.

Veterans claiming preference should submit a copy of their DD214 to the Office of Social Equity, 250 University Avenue, Box 9, California, PA 15419.
