ECA 2021 Convention - Voices of Diversity Interest Group Call for Submissions

The Voices of Diversity Interest Group invites submissions for the 2021 Eastern Communication Association (ECA) Annual Conference. The conferences will be held in Cambridge, MA from March 24th-March 28th, 2021 at the Hyatt Regency Cambridge.
Conference Theme: Resilience
In the spirit of communicative innovations and the work required to kindle new insights to impact our lives and our relationships, communities and world, the Voices of Diversity Interest Group of ECA invites you to submit your communication related work enveloping the concept of “Resilience.” With so many powerful events surrounding diversity, inclusivity, and social change, our voices as communication scholars become more imperative in our actions, relationships, cultures, and communities.
As we well know, it is not only our own voices that matter. Are you innovatively addressing issues of inclusivity, diversity, identity, social activism, muted voices, unjust power structures, and/or collaborative efforts to move toward positive change in our discipline? Are you working towards innovative ideas and adding to a revolution of positive attitudes and perspectives in your scholarship, teaching, and community? Is your work offering voice to others? If you answered yes to these questions, we welcome you to submit your works of innovation to our interest group.
The purpose of the Voices of Diversity Interest Group is to explore the various theories and practices that pertain to the research, teaching, and study of communication within, between, and among diverse communities. We attend to especially to these communities when they are affected and/or marginalized culturally, economically, institutionally, politically, psychologically, and socially because of age, class, disabilities, ethnicity, gender, language, race, religion and/or sexual orientation. The Voices of Diversity Interest Group seeks to facilitate dissemination and discussion of such theories and practices within the field of communication studies. With this mission and the questions above in mind, the Voices of Diversity Interest Group welcomes scholarship and conversations closely aligned with the conference theme and our interest group mission.
The Voices of Diversity Interest Group invites completed papers, panels, round table discussions, symposiums, and community programs across communication contexts that explore the pivotal role exchanging ideas plays in creating, maintaining, and changing what we communicate and how we communicate it. We encourage scholarship that embodies innovative ideas and perspectives within the communication discipline. Submissions that provide an opportunity for voices of various scholars, community members, audience members and the public to engage one another are strongly encouraged. All submissions will be reviewed and evaluated through an anonymous, peer-review process.
From the Programmer of the Conference:
Our vision for the 2021 ECA conference in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is to engage “Resilience” thoughtfully as a persistent response to overcoming obstacles, thriving despite challenges, and adapting to an ever-changing global landscape. As we are embedded in a historical moment marked by “wicked problems,” we look forward to the opportunity to explore resilience for global communities and share possibilities for teaching, research, civic engagement, as well as in our professional and personal endeavors. We recognize that inherent within resilience are conflict and struggle. However, from this discomfort, resilience brings a power and a responsibility to share with the larger global community.
As we respond to global concerns ranging from climate change and terrorism to concerns within higher education and our discipline, we find resilience in ways that attend to both the community and the individual. Despite the challenges we face in our classrooms, on our campuses, and in the world, we have a choice to preserve what is available and find opportunities for growth.
Deadline for Submission:
The deadline for submissions for most interest groups and special programming is October 15, 2020.
Exceptions to the October 15 deadline:
Undergraduate Scholars Conference (including posters) and Graduate Poster submissions are due on December 11, 2020.
Submissions:
All submissions should be uploaded and processed through Attendee Interactive at the following site: https://ecasite.org/aws/ECA/pt/sp/convention_attendee_interactive
Individual submissions of complete papers should include the following elements:
1. A detachable title page with the title of the paper and the author’s affiliation, mailing
address, telephone number, and email address.**
2. The word “Debut” marked on all papers written by authors who have not presented previously at a regional or national convention.
3. A one-page abstract on the second page.
4. A statement of professional responsibility on the second page.
5. If the paper has multiple authors, submitter should indicate who will be presenting at the convention.
Submission of program/panel proposals should include the following elements:
1. A thematic title for the program.
2. Names of the chair and respondents (if any). Chairs should not also be designated as respondents.
3. Names, mailing addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses, and institutional affiliations of all participants.
4. Titles and abstracts for each paper or presentation.
5. A program copy (no more than a 75-word description) as it should appear in the final program.
6. A detailed rationale for the program/panel.
7. A statement of professional responsibility.
Statement of Professional Responsibility:
The following statement MUST be included with every submission of a paper or panel in order for it to be eligible for review. If it is not attached with a submitted document, the chair is responsible for obtaining a completed copy of this form prior to the paper/panel being officially programmed for presentation at the convention.
In submitting the attached paper or proposal, I/We recognize that this submission is considered a professional responsibility. I/We agree to present this panel or paper if it is accepted and programmed. I/We further recognize that all who attend and present at ECA’s annual meeting must register and pay required fees.
