ECA 2020: Health Communication Interest Group

Hi all,

As you have heard, ECA 2020 has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

I have been asked as the Interest Group planner to communicate some important information to you and to ask you to help me with next steps for planning ECA 2021.

Next year’s convention (ECA 2021) will be built based on a new call for papers and a completely new submission process that will open later this spring as is typical. THEREFORE, everyone is free to submit their work previously accepted for ECA 2020 elsewhere.  On your vita, you might list your acceptance at ECA and note that the meeting was canceled—and then list your paper again if accepted at another convention.  You should seek direction from your own Tenure & Promotion committees/chairs/deans and/or be extremely clear so as not to raise problematic questions.

Top Papers from ECA 2020 will still be recognized. Congrats to our Top Paper Award Winners! The convention planner encourages you to note this recognition on your CV.

Yadong Ji, Ohio University. The Side Effects of Seeking Information about Preexposure Prophylaxis (PrEP): A Study of Risk Compensation Intention among Men Who Have Sex with Men after Learning about PrEP.

Amanda Damiano, Marist College, and Jennifer Allen Catellier, Gannon University. Up in Smoke: A Content Analysis of Tweets during the Vaping-Related Illness Epidemic.

Wen Zhao, Fairfield University, and co-authors from Washington State University Alicia Booth, Kalai Lee, Soojung Kang, Xizhu Xiao, and Stacey Hust. Testing the Integrative Model of Behavioral Prediction to Identify the Lack of Work-life Balance and Gender Role Beliefs

ACTION ITEM: We need to elect a program planner for ECA 2022. Julie Volkman will be our program planner for 2021 (she was nominated at last year's business meeting). Please send nominations (self-nominations are encouraged) to Kylie Wilson at kw0059@mix.wvu.edu (our secretary) by Friday, April 10. If you are self-nominating, please include a brief statement about why you would like to be the planner for 2021. If you are nominating others, I encourage you to alert them of this nomination so that they can submit a statement as well. We will then conduct an election through an online survey.

Thank you,
