Innovation Through Internships: Guiding Students Through Their Journeys with Self-Reflection, Education, and Support Fri 3/31 8:30-9:45
At first glance, internships are seen as a practical, vocational exercise where a student learns about a particular career. While this is an accurate assumption, we may not be providing students with everything we can if this is the only way we see it – especially as educators of communication. With content from her recently published book, "I Got The Internship – Now What? A Workbook To Guide You Through Your Journey," Professor Laura O'Connell will guide participants through topics and exercises that will help students through self-reflection, support, and education. This teaching method will transform a student's experience from one-dimensional learning to a critical thinking exercise in career exploration, self-reflection, and success through communication. Participants of this short course will leave with an understanding of the foundational aspects of what an internship is (and isn't) the role of the educator, internship site supervisor, and student in this process, as well as methods and exercises that can be used to guide students before, during and after their internship journeys. With the understanding that every college is set-up differently, has different resources and models, a portion of this short course will allow for idea sharing amongst participants.
