Teaching Struggling Students in Digital Environments:  Low-Tech Solutions for Engagement and Motivation Sat. 4/1 8:30-9:45

A recent 2022 ECAR survey of students comparing modality preferences before and after the pandemic revealed a striking shift toward completely online courses (from 5% to 20%), with all categories involving face-to-face dropping in popularity. While students have begun to prefer the flexibility and anonymity of online learning, along with the ability to learn at their own pace, research and faculty experience also shows substantial and growing issues with class engagement, diminished resilience, and flagging motivation within digital environments.  Among the variety of new apps, new LMS features, and new learning technologies, this Short Course focuses on low-tech and sociological solutions to issues surrounding Zoom fatigue, black screens, teaching strategies, small group activities, office hours, and mentorship.
