ECA 2022 Convention - Voices of Diversity Interest Group Call for Papers

Call for Submissions

Voices of Diversity Interest Group

113th Annual ECA Convention

Philadelphia, PA

April 7 to 9, 2022

As the Voices of Diversity Interest Group, we first and foremost acknowledge that BIPOC lives matter, that no matter where our conference is held, it will take place on stolen land, and that our commitments are to be co-conspirators with those in underrepresented groups. Centering diversity in our scholarship, we, the interest group, acknowledge that conferences typically do not value embodied knowledge of our marginalized communities, and so as an interest group, we prioritize communication scholarship as it intersects with communities affected and marginalized culturally, economically, institutionally, politically, psychologically, and socially because of age, class, disabilities, ethnicity, gender, language, race, religion and/or sexual orientation. We center theories and practices pertaining to the research, teaching, and study of communication within, between, and among diverse communities. With this mission in mind, the Voices of Diversity Interest Group welcomes scholarship and conversations closely aligning with our interest group mission.

The Voices of Diversity Interest Group invites submissions of full papers/performances, paper/performance panels, discussions, symposiums, workshops, and community engagement. We encourage scholarship that embodies innovative ideas and perspectives within communication studies and also across disciplines like ethnic studies, critical race studies, queer studies, intersectional feminist studies, performance studies, and other sub-related disciplines. We also invite community-based perspectives from those leading the charge for substantive change both within and outside academia. Submissions that provide an opportunity for a variety of scholarly voices, activists, performers, community members, and audience members to engage one another are strongly encouraged. Submissions will be reviewed and evaluated through peer-review process.

I look forward to hearing from you and seeing you at the conference. If you have any questions feel free to contact me and I will answer them to the best of my ability or find someone who can.

Take care,

From the Programmer of the Conference:

The 2022 ECA convention will be an opportunity for (re)union! If all goes well, the 2022 convention will be our first “in person” ECA after two years of being unable to gather our community together. We seek to make ECA 2022 an occasion of joyous reconnection and opportunity to build new connections among our community members. We also seek to make ECA 2022 a location of reflection, deliberation, and learning as we emerge from the global pandemic and consider how we as Communication educators and scholars will contribute to a post-pandemic world.

We invite ECA interest groups and members to develop programming for the 2022 convention that focuses on “(Re)union” in a variety of ways, including:

Reuniting colleagues who have similar research and teaching interests

Reuniting colleagues who have made significant contributions through their collaborative work

Reuniting colleagues who have shared mentorship experiences

Building new unions within ECA to move our discipline forward

Building new unions between ECA and the larger communities in which our members live and work

Creating opportunities to connect around shared research and teaching interests

Opportunities for reflection on the effects of the global pandemic on our teaching, research, and professional development and how to move forward

Deliberation on how communication scholars and educators contribute to a post-pandemic world

We look forward to our 2022 (re)union!
