ECA 2023 - Political Communication Interest Group Bulletin

Hi everyone,

I’m looking forward to seeing you at the Eastern Communication Association convention this year. Our interest group has an exciting slate of panels and events scheduled. I want to offer my deepest gratitude to the reviewers for the political communication interest group. Without your help, we would not have had such a robust program planned.

The convention will be held in Baltimore, Maryland, between March 29-April 3. Early bird registration ends March 8. Please see the following link to register: https://www.ecasite.org/aws/ECA/pt/sp/convention_registration.

For the ECA Political Communication interest group, there are several things to be aware of this year:

First, the Political Communication IG business meeting is scheduled for Saturday, April 1, between 8:30-9:45 a.m. We will meet IN-PERSON in the Annapolis Room at the Baltimore Hyatt. Please plan to attend this meeting to participate in the discussion about next year’s ECA convention and to elect new officers.

Second, we are in need of a representative to the Nominating Committee meeting on Friday, March 31 from 8:30-9:45 a.m. in the Annapolis Room. This representative will work with other members of the Nominating Committee to solicit nominations and determine a slate for VP Elect-Select. If you are interested, please email me at khannahprater@ccbcmd.edu.

Third, I would like to introduce the interest group to our secretary, Robert Stise, a PhD student at the University of Delaware. Robert has actively assisted the interest group the past few months as we worked on program planning.

While Robert has actively contributed as secretary, the Political Communication interest group is still in need of a Vice-Chair (who will become next year’s Chair). Due to lack of nominations last year for Vice-Chair, I needed to program plan for the interest group for two years in a row. Unfortunately, I will not be able to program plan for an unprecedented third year, so we must elect new leadership this spring. Traditionally, the outgoing Secretary has become the Vice-Chair the following year, and the outgoing Vice-Chair becomes the Chair the following year. Let’s view this time as an exciting opportunity to fill multiple leadership positions. We will also need to elect a new Secretary to serve during the 2023-2024 academic year.

Fifth, we also need someone to represent the interest group at the Executive Council meetings. The first business meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 29, from 3:15-6:00 p.m., and the second meeting will be held Sunday, April 2, from 10:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Please contact me if you would like to self-nominate to be our representative to Executive Council.

Top Paper Panel:

The Top Papers in Political Communication panel is scheduled for Saturday, April 1, between 10:00-11:15 a.m., in the Camden Room. This panel will directly follow our business meeting but in a different room (see item 1 in the above list). Please come support our distinguished panelists!

Convention of the Future Programming for the Political Communication Interest Group:

One roundtable panel that may not be visible when you use the conference search function under Political Communication is titled, “Divided Federal Government and Future Directions for Political Communication Research.” This round table will be held on Friday, March 31, from 1:00-2:15 p.m., in the Baltimore Room.

Special Events – Wine & Spots and Tour of Fort McHenry

FINALLY, our interest group is hosting two special events.

Once again, thank you for all that you do to support ECA’s Political Communication Interest Group. Please email me at khannahprater@ccbcmd.edu if you would like to nominate yourself for any of the previously mentioned leadership roles. I will send a shorter bulletin requesting political ads for Wine & Spots within the next week.

Sincerely,

Kimberley (Kim) Hannah-Prater, Ph.D.
