San Francisco State University, Department of Communication Studies offers an exciting opportunity for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Critical Communication Pedagogy beginning August 9, 2023. We seek a colleague whose teaching and research interests include a commitment to intersectional antiracist communication pedagogies in addition to one or more of the following areas: communication education; educational equity; instructional design; writing pedagogies; community responsive pedagogies; decolonial pedagogies; disability justice and access-centered pedagogies; performance pedagogies; and/or social justice informed assessment. We are especially interested in qualified candidates with a demonstrated commitment to integrating underrepresented populations and communities in scholarship and/or creative activity, to teaching and mentoring underrepresented students, and to contributing to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education through service.
The Department of Communication Studies at San Francisco State University is the second largest department in the College of Liberal & Creative Arts and the third-largest department at the university. Responsibilities
The position requires graduate and undergraduate teaching in Critical Communication Pedagogy; mentoring and advising graduate and undergraduate students; developing an active ongoing scholarship program or program of creative work in one's area of specialty; and ongoing committee and service assignments.
Qualifications
Required
• Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in Communication Studies or related field from an accredited program. Terminal degree must be completed by the first day of employment.
• Record of working and communicating effectively with colleagues and students
Preferred
• Demonstrated commitment in both teaching contributions and scholarly or creative practice in the area of Critical Communication Pedagogy, including introducing communication studies to upper and lower division university students at multiple levels of experience, working with graduate students on teaching practice and teaching portfolio development for the culminating experience, and supporting student development of written and oral communication.
• Active record of scholarship related to intersectional antiracist communication pedagogies (for instance, but not limited to: justice-centered pedagogy and the study of social inequality; Indigenous pedagogies; transnational pedagogies; Critical Black pedagogies, Critical Latinx pedagogies; Critical African pedagogies; Critical Asian pedagogies) in addition to one or more of the following areas: communication education; educational equity; instructional design; writing pedagogies; community responsive pedagogies; decolonial pedagogies; disability justice and access-centered pedagogies; performance pedagogies; and/or social justice informed assessment.
• Experience with designing, leading, and assessing faculty development for teachers at multiple levels of experience, including Graduate Teaching Associates (GTAs), with a focus on student success, retention, and equity.
• Demonstrated ability to incorporate inclusion, diversity, and educational equity in teaching, and/or scholarship/creative works
• Experience teaching and working closely with students from historically under-represented communities
• Record of contributing to supportive and collaborative work environments
Rank and salary
