The CDAE Department is a transdisciplinary department housed in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Our mission is centered on the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and we are seeking colleagues who can contribute to this mission through teaching, scholarship, and service. CDAE offers undergraduate majors in Community Entrepreneurship, Community Centered Design, Community and International Development, and Public Communication. We offer a Master of Science degree in Community Development and Applied Economics, an accredited Master of Public Administration degree (MPA) and Ph.D. in Sustainable Development, Policy, Economics and Governance. CDAE is home to over 400 undergraduate majors and 85 graduate students
We seek a cohort of colleagues who will advance the department’s scholarship by contributing expertise in their field with an appreciation and interest in the transdisciplinary mindsets and collaborations necessary to solve the increasingly complex problems facing society. Qualified applicants for the tenure-track positions must possess a Ph.D. at the time of appointment, a strong history or potential for applied scholarly research and publication in a field related to the position being applied for, a proven track record or strong potential to obtain sponsored funding, and a commitment to quality teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Applicants for the lecturer positions must possess at least a terminal master’s degree and have a strong record of teaching and service. All applicants must demonstrate a commitment to DEI. In addition, successful applicants must have the desire to work in a transdisciplinary environment and meet the demands of a Research I aspirational university. UVM is a Carnegie Community Engaged institution. This designation celebrates the University's collaboration with community partners from the local to the global level. We are especially interested in applicants with applied research interests that span applied economics, public communication, community development, food systems, rural or development sociology, public policy, and the translation of science to public audiences.
Our students, faculty, and staff are known for cutting-edge research and practice with local, national, and global impact. By engaging policymakers, decision makers, and community members, we help create a more equitable, sustainable, and resilient world. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to work across the department, college and university and interact with several Centers and Institutes, including the Food System Research Center, Center for Rural Studies, Gund Center for the Environment, and the Cooperative Institute for Research to Operations in Hydrology (CIROH).
While the areas of research are open, we have teaching needs in the following areas:
1. Public policy and administration: Introduction to Public Administration, Public Financing, Public Relations, Policy Systems, Human Resources, Non-Profit Management (community entrepreneurship)
2. Community Development and Applied Economics: Introductory, intermediate and advanced courses in applied economics including micro, macro, behavioral, and/or ecological; Introductory, intermediate and advanced courses in domestic and/or international sustainable development (community entrepreneurship); quantitative and qualitative methods
3. Public Communication: introductory and advanced courses in public communication, public communication media, media law, consumer behavior and public policy, strategic communication, small group communication, intercultural communication, social media, and/or, media literacy
