Short Course 7: Diagrams and Theory for Teaching Quotation in Print Journalism
Washington - 3rd Level
This course would introduce visual (non-linguistic) diagrams, which I have devised based on my own research, to describe and explain common source-quotation modes for print journalism. These diagrams have already proved useful in the classroom. I utilize semiotic-pragmatic theory -- specifically, the icon, index, and symbol -- to theoretically ground different quote modes as variously iconic, indexical, or symbolic. This diagram/theory application is quite useful in teaching journalistic quotation, and helpful to faculty teaching it.
