Teaching Assistant Professor - Organizational Communication

The Department of Communication Studies at West Virginia University invites applications for a Teaching Assistant Professor with a specialization in Organizational Communication starting August 15, 2025. This is a 9-month, full-time, position with full benefits. Teaching Assistant Professor appointments have renewable terms of up to three years, with no limit on the number of terms. These positions are eligible for promotion (e.g., Teaching Assistant Professor to Teaching Associate Professor, etc.); however, promotion to senior ranks is not a requirement for institutional commitment and career stability.

Our faculty members are dedicated to developing students’ critical and practical, problem-solving and decision-making, and presentation skills with the intent of empowering students to construct and deliver context-specific messages across their personal, social, and professional relationships. The Department of Communication Studies has been historically impactful and comprises faculty who are research productive, excellent classroom instructors, and have a strong commitment to faculty governance and inclusion. The department offers a full range of academic programs including a B.A., online M.A., and Ph.D. program. Additionally, the department supports WVU students through general education, college core, and minor courses.
Responsibilities
We seek an outstanding and dedicated instructor who will be responsible for teaching various courses in the department as needed. The successful applicant will teach courses in Organizational Communication and other areas of department need likely including courses such as Public Communication, Business and Professional Communication, Group Communication, and Public Speaking. Additionally, the candidate may teach in the online M.A. program, which focuses on Strategic Organizational Communication. The candidate will also be expected to contribute to department and university through reasonable service, including active participation in department discussions and initiatives. The teaching load is 4 courses or course equivalents per semester and teaching excellence is an expectation in the department.
Professional Qualifications
The successful applicant must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in Communication Studies or a closely related field with a focus in Organizational Communication at the time of employment and evidence of: 1) high quality independent undergraduate teaching experience; 2) ability to teach courses in the Organizational Communication area ; 3) knowledge of and desire to pursue assessment-based advancement of curriculum and instruction; 4) ability to teach Public Communication, Business and Professional Communication, Group Communication, Public Speaking, or similar courses offered in the department; 5) strong potential to contribute to the department’s B.A. and M.A. teaching missions; 6) ability to contribute to department student success initiatives; 7) excellent organization and communication skills.
