The 108th Annual ECA Convention in Boston will offer the bi-Annual Basic Course Conference (#BCC17). The Basic Couse Conference is held every other year during the first day of the ECA Annual Convention. The goal of the conference is to expand our understanding of pedagogy associated with the Communication Basic Course.

For BCC17 we will encounter the theme of Freedom to … Freedom From as it relates to the basic communication course. As always, our programing will be valuable for all basic course stakeholders. Unique to this year, 1st First Vice-President Elect: Benjamin R. Bates has called on us to enhance the focus on the basic course at community colleges, two-year institutions, and liberal arts focused institutions. Also, unique this year we will engage in workshop-style consultations to provide new and tangible ideas/practices to use the following semester, in part, through a morning session. To achieve both aims, our program will offer traditional panels, professional development related pedagogy and research sessions, and opportunities to engage in dialogue about the current issues of basic course pedagogy.

The #BCC17 will include:

  • Teaching Practice Enhancement: Join us for a morning workshop with Teacher Transformational Training (TTT) Co-Founder Dr. Pratt Bennett of Berklee College of Music, Boston, MA. Pratt’s work focuses on helping each professor design, experiment with, and refine more effective teaching tools for their specific courses, and on tracking their effectiveness. [*more details tba]
  • Traditional Panel Presentations and Breakout Sessions
  • Evening Gathering: Participants are encouraged to join us in the evening for a casual gathering where to continue our discussions [*details tba]
